Gandhi : Different People , different Meanings
Today is Martyrs Day. A supposed holiday again. I got up to my mom’s grouching while surfing the channels to see people paying homage to Gandhiji’s last resting place at Rajghat but getting annoyed with not much coverage . In office also, no one even remembers the day .Not much a believer in Gandhi ji’s ideology myself, I will not dig much in past, his status as nation’s father, his contribution to our independence, his realization of importance of Swadeshi, Dalit upliftment, his stand against untouchability. But still I find it a sad part that we remember him only on 2 october, 30th January or in elections speeches by leaders. For many of the common people Gandhi has become a synonym of Currency. Here I am reminded of a dialogue from a film when a commoner ask the officer “
Gandhi ji ki tasveer ke samne baithe ho, kuch to sharam karo” and prompt came the reply” Tum bhi Gandhi dikhao, aur kam karao”.What an irony? To some, Gandhi means an ideology, to others, he is just a face on currency notes.
